NHS chiefs have banned mums-to-be from giving birth at their hospital if they weigh too much.

Women wanting to have babies at Weston General Hospital in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, are required to have their body mass index (BMI) calculated.

Anyone with a BMI figure of over 34 will be turned away and made to travel 20 miles to a more fully-equipped maternity unit in Bristol.

BMI is a formula based on height and weight. A reading of 34 is equivalent to a 5ft 6in woman weighing 15 stone.

Those wishing for a healthier lifestyle before planning a pregnancy may wish to consider weight loss surgery with The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group is Ireland and the UK’s biggest provider of weight loss surgery and has seen a 73.9% increase, with a staggering 12,848 people seeking surgery in 2008.  In 2007, 7,385 people enquired into gastric procedures.

The surgery, including gastric bands, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons can be used alongside liposculpture – also known as liposuction – and abdominoplasty – the common tummy tuck – to sculpt and perfect your body and give you a healthier lifestyle.

Such is the interest in The Hospital Group’s weight loss procedures, bookings have increased to levels above that of the NHS.

While the NHS reported that it had performed 2,724 weight-loss operations in 2008, The Hospital Group performed a total of 3,015 gastric procedures in the same period.

The Hospital Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Despite the current financial climate, we are still seeing a huge rise in interest in gastric surgery. It would seem that, despite everything, people seeking weight loss surgery are willing to spend more on private surgery to avoid long NHS waiting lists.
“At The Hospital Group, people can be assured of a dedicated, professional service, with astounding success rates and a limited waiting time. The huge rise seen industry-wide shows the new demand for weight loss surgery, and it would seem the NHS just can’t cope with this demand.
“The Fern Britton effect has made people more aware of what obesity surgery can achieve, and it looks like people are really recognising the huge benefits of gastric surgery. Certainly, The Hospital Group experienced a surge in enquiries whenever the media covered Fern’s procedure.”

Sleeping problems can be linked back to a rise in obesity in the West Midlands UK and the Ireland according to a leading Birmingham-based sleep expert.

Increased obesity levels could lead to a significant rise in the amount of reported sleeping complaints and health problems, says Dr. Dev Banerjee, Heartlands Hospital sleep consultant.

Dr. Banerjee believes problems such as sleep apnoea and snoring will drastically increase over the next five years, if obesity levels continue to rise at the current rate.

UK figures from 2007 showed that approximately 25% of adults (above 16 years old) were classed as obese, although current estimates now put the figure closer to 30%. *

As the focus on the nation’s expanding waistlines grows, medical experts now believe that weight loss surgery can completely eliminate all types of Diabetes.

Ireland and the UK’s number one weight loss surgery provider, The Hospital Group, has seen outstanding long-term results for its gastric band patients over the last three years.

Of the 106 gastric band operations performed in January 2007, the total weight loss was a massive 300 stone. Obesity is the main risk factor for Diabetes, so sustained weight loss on this level goes a long way towards fighting the condition, which affects 2.5 million people in the UK,*

The research published by the American Journal for Medicine** showed that following obesity surgery, 87% of diabetics either saw a complete cure or improvement.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group, said: “More and more people are choosing to have obesity surgery with The Hospital Group and it’s fantastic because people see results so quickly, which gives them the get up and go to live healthier lifestyles – some free from Diabetes. You wouldn’t think it, but Australia is the gastric band capital of the world. Their government recognises the long-term savings it can make by funding obesity surgery on their national healthcare system – and in the same way, obesity surgery in the UK is saving the NHS money by curing Diabetes patients, which is currently costing the NHS £1m an hour.”*

The huge surge in demand for obesity fighting treatments such as Gastric Bands, Balloons and Bypasses from The Hospital Group has more than doubled in the last year, rising from 111 operations in February 2008 to 225 in the same month in 2009.

Continuing the trend, enquiries into gastric band surgery have risen by almost 25% from 727 in February 2007 to 963 in February 2009. Health-conscious surgery-seekers in February 2008 made 815 enquiries into The Hospital Group’s obesity surgery.

The Hospital Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none. Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of Ireland the UK’s foremost cosmetic surgery providers, and the same high standards remain to this day.
