Gordon Ramsay is famous for a number of reasons; his cooking, short temper, foul mouth and, notably, his furrowed brow and chin.

But not for much longer. Ramsay has admitted to having BOTOX® injections only a month after telling Australian TV presenter, Tracy Grimshaw, that she needed the treatment herself.

The controversial chef and host of “The F word” had his haggard chin smoothed after close friend, Simon Cowell, teased him about his looks.

Recent reports show that Irishmen are increasingly spending more money on their looks. Therefore it’s no surprise that cosmetic surgery clinics have reported an increase in non-surgical procedures such facial peels, fillers and Botox®.

Botox® is just one of many procedures which has increased in popularity over recent years. Many high profile celebrities such as Britains Got Talents, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell are big Botox® ambassadors, having several sessions a year.

The treatment itself involves the injection of purified protein into the chosen area, which then reduces the activity of the muscles that cause the formation of wrinkles over time.

Botox® has now been taken a step further and can even prevent excess sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. A series of injections in the treated area, usually the underarm, will gradually decrease levels of perspiration until it practically stops for the next six months.

Girl band Girls Aloud have set their sights ‘eye’ after launching a range of fake eyelashes to accompany their portfolio of products.

Their new Eylure range will be the latest in a string of business ventures which includes deals with shampoo firms, chocolate bar makers and computer games manufacturers.

However, there is an alternative treatment available which produces full, natural eyelashes instead of fake substitutes. RevitaLash is a unique eyelash conditioner which gives longer, thicker and fuller lashes in three to ten weeks.

And the innovative treatment is now available through Ireland and the UK’s leading cosmetic surgeons, The Hospital Group; the first Irish and UK surgery provider to sell the product.

RevitaLash was created and developed by Dr Michael Brinkenhoff as a gift for his wife, Gayle, who was recovering from breast cancer. Gayle’s eyelashes were left brittle and thin following intensive chemotherapy so Michael formulated the eyelash conditioner which renewed the vitality of her lashes.

Dr Brinkenhoff, Managing Director of RevitaLash, said: “Often we feel helpless when someone we love is suffering. I am very fortunate to have been able to help Gayle through her recovery. Watching her be excited about her beautiful looking eyelashes has been a real joy.”

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group, said: “RevitaLash is a great addition to The Hospital Group’s product range. We are already recognised as the UK and Ireland’s leading cosmetic surgery provider for procedures ranging from breast enlargement to hair transplantation, and now products like RevitaLash help women to perfect their look in their own homes. The difference it can make to your lashes is truly unbelievable; nothing available on the high street can replicate RevitaLash’s results.”

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of  Ireland the UK’s foremost cosmetic surgery providers. The Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none. The Hospital Group has  19 clinics in UK and 4 Clinics in Ireland, Belfast, Dublin, Cork and Galway.

A friend made an interesting comment the other day: that no woman of substance is bothered about beauty. Call me defensive, but I don’t think being interested in beauty means you are superficial or vain. True, it may mean being seduced at times by the latest highly paid celeb fronting a perfume campaign or buying an anti-wrinkle cream because of its inflated claims.

But it can also mean acquiring real, healing benefits, both in how you look and how you feel. Just remind yourself how  something as simple as a slick of scarlet lipstick can serve as an instant confidence-booster or how a glowing facial or peel can makes you look and feel radiant, when perhaps, you’re feeling anything but! Let’s face, in these stressful credit crunch times, being pleased with your appearance can make all the difference.

Welcome to a new lifestyle breed: the chemi-ganics.
.
These are women who are just as likely to be found among the seeds and pulses of their local health store as they are in the waiting rooms of cosmetic surgery clinics. They’ve always fought the ageing process organically but now they won’t say no to a bit of chemical help. Think of it as the Madonna effect. The 50 year old pop star fuses spirituality, Pilates, and a macrobiotic diet with surgical intervention.

She’s not alone. Take Demi Moore, also a kabbalah devotee who has reportedly spent tens of thousands of dollars on her outward appearance. Even Elizabeth Hurley happily trumpets the benefits of a country lifestyle, yet doesn’t appear to have aged a day or sprouted a wrinkle for almost a decade.
.
It isn’t only celebs, either. Increasingly, the rest of us are mixing wholesome, organic elements with the ultimate in science. A recent report by Mintel showed a simultaneous growth in the demand for organic beauty care and high-tech procedures. Marian Salzman, the fifty something US-based trend forecaster is a signed-up member of the chemi-ganics gang. “ It’s a different world, with different pressures. Using different methods is part of curating the self. We use the spiritual to make us feel stronger and more vibrant, but we also have other tools – be they natural, psychological, surgical, pharmacological or cosmetic – that we’re not afraid to use.”

No matter how much I try to maintain a rigorous beauty routine through the winter months, it has taken a spring wedding (and the accompanying “whether to wear tights” dilemma) to make me painfully aware that I suffer from an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality when it comes to body upkeep. Not that it’s anything too grotesque, mind, just scarily pale skin and  a few bumpy bits that could do with a good scrub, some turbo-powered hydration and a wash of colour.

Oh, and I’d love to have the kind of smooth shins and underarms that would make summer dresses a doodle. Now, I’ve never got on with my razor and I hate the smell of the creams but I’m determined not to have yeti-like body parts,  so I’m signing up for laser hair removal.

For once I’m ahead of the game as I’ve plenty of time to schedule in my treatments before the sun really begins to shine. A course of hair removal can take four to six treatments and should be six week apart. Now the only dilemma I’m focused on is the relative merits of gladiators versus platforms for my holiday poolside posing..
