Scientists have discovered that drinking white, as well as red wine can lead to staining of the teeth.
The research by the New York University College of Dentistry showed that the acids in white wine create grooves and rough spots in teeth that allow chemicals in drinks like tea and coffee to penetrate deeper into the tooth, leading to staining.

The scientists dipped two sets of cow teeth, whose structure resembles that of human teeth, in water and white wine for one hour and then soaked them in black tea. An instrument that measures colour intensities then proved that the teeth immersed in tea had significantly darker staining.
The study showed that red wine is still the deadliest of drinks, due to a highly-pigmented substance in red wine known as chromogen.
Professor Mark Woolff, who led the study, said: “Dipping teeth in white wine for one hour is similar to the effect of sipping the wine with dinner.”

Dirty dents to pearly whites: The Hospital Group’s guide to Teeth Whitening
An internet search brings up countless miracle cures for stained teeth. But not all are as straightforward as they seem…
• Lemon juice. It is thought that the mild acid in the juice breaks down stains, but scientists have found it also breaks down the tooth enamel, causing your teeth to eventually decay. Short-term gain for long-term pain.
• Hydrogen peroxide. Gargle once a week with the chemical, then rinse and brush immediately with your regular toothpaste. Mildly effective, but distasteful.
• Strawberries. When mixed with baking soda, it is believed that the malic acid in the berries can gently loosen staining. However, the sugar in the fruit negates much of its benefit, and the mixture isn’t as tasty as you’d expect!
• Wood ash. George Washington used wood ash to polish his silver, so some think it will work just as well on their teeth. The potassium hydroxide in the ash is effective, but will break down your teeth over time.
• Teeth whitening at The Hospital Group. Professional teeth whitening at The Hospital Group is safe, pain-free, effective and long-lasting.
