Leading cosmetic surgeon Paul Super from the UK’s and Ireland biggest weight loss surgery provider, The Hospital Group, has been seen tackling  Ireland and Britain’s obesity epidemic on primetime television.

Mr Super, who is said to have performed 20 per cent of all the gastric band operations in the UK and Ireland, assesses three patients in ‘The Hospital’ programme and advises them on their procedure.
Such is the interest in The Hospital Group’s weight loss procedures, bookings have increased to levels above that of the NHS.
While the NHS reported that it had performed 2,724 weight-loss operations in 2008, The Hospital Group performed a total of 3,015 gastric procedures in the same period.

Along with surgery partner Why Go Abroad, the huge number of operations booked with The Group reflects a growing trend of people forced into going private in their quest for a perfect, healthier body as the NHS buckles under the strain of demand.

The Hospital Group has seen a 73.9% increase in interest in weight loss surgery, with a staggering 12,848 people seeking surgery in 2008. In 2007, 7,385 people enquired into gastric procedures.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Despite the current financial climate, we are still seeing a huge rise in interest in gastric surgery. It would seem that, despite everything, people seeking weight loss surgery are willing to spend more on private surgery to avoid long NHS waiting lists.
“At The Hospital Group, people can be assured of a dedicated, professional service, with astounding success rates and a limited waiting time. The huge rise seen industry-wide shows the new demand for weight loss surgery, and it would seem the NHS just can’t cope with this demand.
“The Fern Britton effect has made people more aware of what obesity surgery can achieve, and it looks like people are really recognising the huge benefits of gastric surgery. Certainly, The Hospital Group experienced a surge in enquiries whenever the media covered Fern’s procedure.”
The Hospital Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none. Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of Ireland and the UK’s foremost weight loss surgery providers.

Sleeping problems can be linked back to a rise in obesity in the West Midlands UK and the Ireland according to a leading Birmingham-based sleep expert.

Increased obesity levels could lead to a significant rise in the amount of reported sleeping complaints and health problems, says Dr. Dev Banerjee, Heartlands Hospital sleep consultant.

Dr. Banerjee believes problems such as sleep apnoea and snoring will drastically increase over the next five years, if obesity levels continue to rise at the current rate.

UK figures from 2007 showed that approximately 25% of adults (above 16 years old) were classed as obese, although current estimates now put the figure closer to 30%. *

An increasing number of men are now undergoing breast reduction surgery in a bid to improve their physical appearance.

New figures reveal a vast amount of men are opting for procedures such as surgery for gynaecomastia (commonly known as ‘man boobs’). More than 320 of these operations were performed last year, compared with just 22 five years ago.

According to the Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) in Britian, the number of men having cosmetic surgery has now risen to almost one in 10 patients. And with an increase of 44% since last year, male breast reduction surgery has surpassed other rises in overall breast augmentation and tummy tucks.

Nigel Mercer, President of the BAAPS, said: “Wide media coverage has helped to educate the public about the latest advances and choices available, and we are encouraged by the fact that more people are doing their research carefully and choosing reputable providers.

The Hospital Group, Ireland’s and the UK’s leading provider of cosmetic surgery, perform a wide range of aesthetic procedures in specialist clinics across the country. It carried out 46 male breast reduction procedures last year, compared with just five in 2004.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group, said: “Many men have body image problems and low self-esteem from gynaecomastia. They may have been teased at school or in the gym about the fat on their chests. Some men even refuse to show their chests in front of their partners because they’re so embarrassed. The surgery is fantastic because men see results so quickly, which gives them the get up and go to live happier lifestyles.”

Excessive chest tissue can be the result of hormonal changes, disease, certain drugs or hereditary conditions. It can also be exaggerated with weight gain or loss and may affect one or both breasts. The condition can often cause embarrassment and can affect males of any age.

As well as male breast reduction, The Hospital Group performs other cosmetic procedures such as liposculpture fat removal, abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) and arm lift surgery.

Girl band Girls Aloud have set their sights ‘eye’ after launching a range of fake eyelashes to accompany their portfolio of products.

Their new Eylure range will be the latest in a string of business ventures which includes deals with shampoo firms, chocolate bar makers and computer games manufacturers.

However, there is an alternative treatment available which produces full, natural eyelashes instead of fake substitutes. RevitaLash is a unique eyelash conditioner which gives longer, thicker and fuller lashes in three to ten weeks.

And the innovative treatment is now available through Ireland and the UK’s leading cosmetic surgeons, The Hospital Group; the first Irish and UK surgery provider to sell the product.

RevitaLash was created and developed by Dr Michael Brinkenhoff as a gift for his wife, Gayle, who was recovering from breast cancer. Gayle’s eyelashes were left brittle and thin following intensive chemotherapy so Michael formulated the eyelash conditioner which renewed the vitality of her lashes.

Dr Brinkenhoff, Managing Director of RevitaLash, said: “Often we feel helpless when someone we love is suffering. I am very fortunate to have been able to help Gayle through her recovery. Watching her be excited about her beautiful looking eyelashes has been a real joy.”

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group, said: “RevitaLash is a great addition to The Hospital Group’s product range. We are already recognised as the UK and Ireland’s leading cosmetic surgery provider for procedures ranging from breast enlargement to hair transplantation, and now products like RevitaLash help women to perfect their look in their own homes. The difference it can make to your lashes is truly unbelievable; nothing available on the high street can replicate RevitaLash’s results.”

As the focus on the nation’s expanding waistlines grows, medical experts now believe that weight loss surgery can completely eliminate all types of Diabetes.

Ireland and the UK’s number one weight loss surgery provider, The Hospital Group, has seen outstanding long-term results for its gastric band patients over the last three years.

Of the 106 gastric band operations performed in January 2007, the total weight loss was a massive 300 stone. Obesity is the main risk factor for Diabetes, so sustained weight loss on this level goes a long way towards fighting the condition, which affects 2.5 million people in the UK,*

The research published by the American Journal for Medicine** showed that following obesity surgery, 87% of diabetics either saw a complete cure or improvement.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group, said: “More and more people are choosing to have obesity surgery with The Hospital Group and it’s fantastic because people see results so quickly, which gives them the get up and go to live healthier lifestyles – some free from Diabetes. You wouldn’t think it, but Australia is the gastric band capital of the world. Their government recognises the long-term savings it can make by funding obesity surgery on their national healthcare system – and in the same way, obesity surgery in the UK is saving the NHS money by curing Diabetes patients, which is currently costing the NHS £1m an hour.”*

The huge surge in demand for obesity fighting treatments such as Gastric Bands, Balloons and Bypasses from The Hospital Group has more than doubled in the last year, rising from 111 operations in February 2008 to 225 in the same month in 2009.

Continuing the trend, enquiries into gastric band surgery have risen by almost 25% from 727 in February 2007 to 963 in February 2009. Health-conscious surgery-seekers in February 2008 made 815 enquiries into The Hospital Group’s obesity surgery.

The Hospital Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none. Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of Ireland the UK’s foremost cosmetic surgery providers, and the same high standards remain to this day.

Sumo wrestling is facing ruin because of an infectious skin disease spreading throughout the sport – and causing top wrestlers to lose their hair.

As the wrestlers grapple with one another, the fungus spreads itching and baldness, causing flakes of skin to flake off. The disease also enters hair follicles and causes hair loss causing much disquiet in the sport as the wrestlers lose their famous ‘top-knots’.

Wrestlers have been forced to undertake a three-month course of drugs to rid themselves of the disease, but the hair loss is permanent.

Throughout the sport, hair is recognised as central to a wrestlers’ reputation, in much the same way that in many cultures hair is acknowledged as a symbol of virility.

Since the Edo period sumo wrestlers have been expected to grow their hair long and adopt the ‘top-knot’ style. Such is the superstition surrounding a wrestler’s hair, Yokozuna Tochigiyama, Japan’s most successful wrestlers, retired in his prime in 1925 as he did not have enough hair.

Men in  Ireland need not go to such lengths if they are suffering from hair loss.

The Hospital Group, the UK and Irelands leading cosmetic surgeons, perform more hair restoration procedures than any other surgery provider, and only carry out natural hair transplants using the latest Follicular Hair Transplantation techniques.

Follicular Transplantation involves transplanting hair units, often with four or five hairs growing from one follicle, to a bald spot to generate growth.

Human hairs are genetically programmed to either be sensitive to the male hormone, which causing them to die, or to be permanently immune to the hormone and last a lifetime. Hair Transplantation uses the ‘lifetime growth’ hairs from around the back of the head, and transplants them in areas where the hairs have died.

Hair or Follicular Transplantationat The Hospital Group is a minor surgical procedure, taking little more than three hours.

The Hospital Group’s hair restoration and transplantation clinic was founded in 1992, and is staffed with industry experts at its dedicated Dolan Park Hospital in the Midlands.

Scientists have discovered that drinking white, as well as red wine can lead to staining of the teeth.

The research by the New York University College of Dentistry showed that the acids in white wine create grooves and rough spots in teeth that allow chemicals in drinks like tea and coffee to penetrate deeper into the tooth, leading to staining.

The scientists dipped two sets of cow teeth, whose structure resembles that of human teeth, in water and white wine for one hour and then soaked them in black tea. An instrument that measures colour intensities then proved that the teeth immersed in tea had significantly darker staining.

The study showed that red wine is still the deadliest of drinks, due to a highly-pigmented substance in red wine known as chromogen.

Professor Mark Woolff, who led the study, said: “Dipping teeth in white wine for one hour is similar to the effect of sipping the wine with dinner.”

The Hospital Group,  Ireland and the UK’s leading cosmetic surgeons, perform a wide range of cosmetic dentistry procedures in its specialist clinics in Ireland and UK.

The NuSmile dentistry treatment centres at The Hospital Group perform around 250 procedures a year, including teeth whitening, painfree veneers (that require no drilling of your natural teeth), invisible braces, white fillings and porcelain crowns.

Professional whitening at The Hospital Group is the most effective way of tooth whitening while leaving your teeth untouched.

Teeth whitening treatments available on the high street can provide some definite improvement, but for long-lasting results that are kind to your teeth dentists recommend professional whitening.

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of the UK’s foremost cosmetic surgery providers. Dirty dents to pearly whites: The Hospital Group’s guide to Teeth Whitening
An internet search brings up countless miracle cures for stained teeth. But not all are as straightforward as they seem…

• Lemon juice.  It is thought that the mild acid in the juice breaks down stains, but scientists have found it also breaks down the tooth enamel, causing your teeth to eventually decay. Short-term gain for long-term pain.

• Hydrogen peroxide. Gargle once a week with the chemical, then rinse and brush immediately with your regular toothpaste. Mildly effective, but distasteful.

• Strawberries. When mixed with baking soda, it is believed that the malic acid in the berries can gently loosen staining. However, the sugar in the fruit negates much of its benefit, and the mixture isn’t as tasty as you’d expect!

• Wood ash. George Washington used wood ash to polish his silver, so some think it will work just as well on their teeth. The potassium hydroxide in the ash is effective, but will break down your teeth over time.

• Teeth whitening at The Hospital Group. Professional teeth whitening at The Hospital Group is safe, pain-free, effective and long-lasting.

A new government drive against obesity will require all adults aged between 40 and 74 to take a ‘fat test’ at their GPs, who will prescribe weight management and exercise if they are overweight.
The tests, which are the first systematic programme to help fight the nation’s obesity problems, aim to identify risk of heart disease, strokes, type 2 Diabetes and kidney disease.

Dawn Primarolo, the Public Health Minister, said: “More than 60 per cent of adults in England are overweight or obese, leaving them at greater risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart and liver disease.”

Leading cosmetic surgery provider The Hospital Group has seen the number of people seeking obesity surgery almost double in the last 10 months, with a huge increase of 73.9 per cent.

She has long been known for her age-less looks, but Kylie has finally revealed the secret of her vitality – regular Botox injections.

The pint-sized popstress admitted the secret behind her youthful looks was Botox and other age-defying treatments.
In an interview with Elle magazine, the 40-year-old said: “I’ve tried Botox, I’ve tried them all. I’m definitely not one of those people who says ‘You shouldn’t do this.’ Everyone individually can do what they want. I also think it doesn’t have the stigma that it had when I was growing up.

“For all time women have wanted to, for the most part, look their best. It’s just that what we have available to us today is – what it is today. And if you want to take advantage of it, yeah.”

Kylie’s perfect complexion has sparked many rumours over the years. One cosmetic surgeon has publicly claimed that, in their opinion, as well as Botox, she has had her cheeks and lips cosmetically enhanced.

The Hospital Group, the UK’s leading cosmetic surgery provider, performs many non-surgical age-defying treatments at its clinics, including Botox anti-wrinkle treatment, facial fillers, skin peels, hyperhidrosis and mole removal.

Kylie’s revelation has provoked commentators to point out her seemingly frozen forehead and eyebrows. However, The Hospital Group’s Juvéderm facial fillers plump up the appearance of laughter lines, frown lines and other wrinkles for the more natural look when used alongside Botox anti-wrinkle treatment.

As well as these non-surgical procedures, The Hospital Group performs other age-defying surgical treatments such as face and brow lifts. Other surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty, otoplasty, eyebag removal and eye lifts complete The Hospital Group’s age-beating treatments.

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of the UK’s foremost cosmetic surgery providers. It wasn’t long ago that cosmetic surgery was something that only the very rich and famous did – and something that was very much hush-hush. How times have changed.
Now the latest research has shown that there is no typical cosmetic surgery client and that having a procedure has become much more socially acceptable.
For instance, none of my friends need prompting when it comes to the topic of cosmetic surgery! We’re all avid fans of makeover shows like The Swan and 10 Years Younger and we devour style magazines to read about our favourite stars and their procedures. And we’ve all shared our top beauty booster fixes.
Now that the recession is in full swing, all chat and energy has gone into finding ways to save face on a budget. One friend, who was coming up to a big birthday, had the cunning idea to ask her family and friends to contribute to her ‘beauty fund’. Instead of receiving a truckload of presents she didn’t want or need, she now gets to treat yourself with her favourite facial peels and feel fresh faced for summer.
